Secret Recipe

Bruce Bogtrotters Bisto Brownie

This recipie has been inspired by the humongously rich chocolate cake that Bruce Bogtrotter is forced to eat in Roald Dahls renowned book Matilda.

As far as I am aware this is the first recipe of its kind. A night before an event. At half one in the morning, I accidentally mistook a red Bisto container for a red container of Bournville dark chocolate powder. It was too late to go get new ingredients. So, I baked it anyway. And surprisingly it worked. So much so I’ve developed a way to always put it in my brownie mixture, on purpose this time! You can try make it for yourself at home:

60g Bisto Gravy Granules
180ml Soya Milk
250g of your favourite Chocolate, finely chopped
180g Margarine
320g Caster Sugar
250g of your favourite Chocolate, broken into chunks
60g Cocoa Powder
10g Baking Powder
190g Plain Flour

- Place the Bisto and the Soya milk into a large pan. Turn the heat to high and constantly whisk until it thickens.

- Take the pan off the heat and immediately add 250g of the finely chopped chocolate, stir with a spoon until it’s melted.

- Once the chocolate has fully melted add the margarine and stir well until incorporated.

- When the margarine has been fully incorporated into the mixture pour into a clean bowl. At this stage the mixture should be at room temperature.

- Add the sugar and 250g of chocolate chunks and stir well to combine.

- Fold in the plain flour, cocoa powder and baking powder.

- Spread the batter into a greaseproof lined baking dish (20cm x 20cm) and spread until flat.

- Allow the brownie batter to rest in its baking dish in the fridge for one hour.

- Preheat the oven to 170c

- Bake for 35 minutes. When you've taken the brownies out of the oven allow them to cool and place in the fridge to set. Once set, cut up and enjoy! Keep any leftovers in the fridge!
